Sacred Writings/Texts
- Buddhist sacred texts are only thought of as guides on the path to truth, not truth itself.
- There are many sacred texts in Buddhism, but not all texts are accepted by all groups of people in Buddhism.
- Early texts were made for monks
- Commonly divided into categories; canonical (the general rule or principle) and non-canonical (the rules that do not observe the general rules and principles)
- There are 2 forms of text; Sanskrit and Pali
- The Sanskrit is an ancient Indic language
- The Pali is a Prakit (group of middle Indic) language that is a scriptural and liturgical language in Theravada Buddhism.
- The categorisation doesn’t always apply to all texts. There are some texts that will belong to more than one category.
